“Sony Steps up War on Jailbreaking - PC World” plus 1 more |
| Sony Steps up War on Jailbreaking - PC World Posted: 25 Sep 2010 10:38 AM PDT According to reports, a new Sony 3.50 firmware update to the PlayStation 3 disables "a number of" third party USB devices. Meanwhile, a Dreamcast and Super Nintendo game emulators hit jailbroken PS3s.
Adding more weight to the reports is a consumer alerts post that appeared on the company website the day 3.50 released. It reads, "SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates." Users on the PlayStation forums claim as much as 75 percent of USB devices are now disabled -- however, some also say that their unlicensed clone controller devices still work. Despite the alleged disabling of USB devices, jailbroken PlayStation 3s are still seeing plenty of homebrew action. Today, Engadget reports that both Snes9x (Super Nintendo) and NullDC (Dreamcast) game emulators are up and running on PlayStation Network, albeit in rough form. "We naturally have a long way to go," Engadget reporter Paul Miller writes, "but this looks like a promising beginning."
