| Sony will ban Playstation 3 hackers for life - Inquirer Posted: 17 Feb 2011 02:55 AM PST CONTROL FREAK gaming console maker Sony has given a final ultimatum to Playstation 3 hackers - stop doing it or we'll ban you from online game playing for life. In a statement Sony said that anyone using circumvention devices or running unauthorised or 'pirated' software "will have access to the Playstation Network and access to Qriocity services through Playstation 3 system terminated permanently". People have already reported seeing warning emails come up as soon as they get online. Sony has been getting tough with anybody using tools to run other software and 'pirated' games on the PS3, claiming that they are breaking copyright laws. Recently George Hotz, alias geohot, was hit with a Sony lawsuit after hacking the Playstation 3. To those people fond of hacking this might seem draconian, but Sony gamers in the main seem quite supportive of the stance. Obviously they are upset about people getting games for nothing by breaking the law, but online cheating in games through mods has become quite a nuisance. But people hack the Playstation 3 for a number of reasons that don't involve running illegally copied games. For example, you can use it as a Playstation 2 emulator or make it run Linux. You can also downgrade the firmware if you so choose, if you aren't happy with Sony's software upgrades. But Sony's statement means that any fiddling with its custom firmware can result in a complete ban. µ This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php |
