“This Is The PlayStsation Phone - Tom's Guide” plus 1 more |
| This Is The PlayStsation Phone - Tom's Guide Posted: 27 Oct 2010 05:31 PM PDT Days ago we reported that Sony revealed the PSP2 behind closed doors during the Tokyo Game Show. The device sported a larger, HD-capable screen and a touch pad on the rear of the unit. Surprisingly, what we didn't hear about--also pointed out in other reports--was anything in regards to the PlayStation Phone.
On the hardware front, the phone will reportedly have a 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 512 MB of RAM and 1 GB of storage (ROM). The screen will measure roughly between 3.7 to 4.1-inches and will slide up to reveal a long touchpad mounted between the trademark PlayStation D-pad and 4-button configurations. The device will also feature two shoulder buttons and a microSD card slot for storage (sorry, no Memory Stick slot). The big shocker here is the phone's alleged use of Google's Android platform. Reports indicate that it will be Gingerbread, but its use is somewhat questionable given this will be a PlayStation product. It would make more sense for Sony Ericsson to modify the PSP OS to work in a mobile phone environment rather than develop a game emulator for the Android platform (although one is available on the Android Market that plays PlayStation One games). Then again, if Sony doesn't plan for users to play current PSP and old PlayStation One games on the device, then Android would be understandable. We also have to question how this phone will play in the overall PlayStaton picture with the PSP2 gearing up for a supposed 2011 release. The phone packs plenty of punch in the hardware department when compared to the PSP-3000 and PSPgo, however it can't devalue the upcoming handheld platform. Reports also indicate that the phone will feature a custom Sony Marketplace allowing users to purchase and download games designed for the device. If that's the case, the Sony Marketplace may simply load up the PlayStation Store and allow gamers to download "minis," movies, TV shows, and non-gaming applications. But there's a good chance Sony and Sony Ericsson want to make this device a PSPgo with a built-in phone--that would really rock Apple's world. The PlayStation Phone (PSPhone) was rumored to hit the market by the end of the year, however the prototype images say otherwise. We may actually see this device revealed alongside the PSP2 during E3 2011, however because it's a smartphone at heart, it may still have a shot at landing in our Christmas stockings. To see the latest batch of PlayStation Phone images, head Engadget's report here. | Devices that don't exist: the white iPhone, the PlayStation Phone - Washington Post (blog) Posted: 27 Oct 2010 07:41 AM PDT The least surprising headline of the last 24 hours: "Apple delays white iPhone until next spring." Yes, Apple's white whale--I mean, the white version of its iPhone 4--has fallen behind schedule. Again. The news, as reported by Reuters last night, represents the third delay of this device since Apple announced it as a variant of the black iPhone 4 in June. Back then, the white and black versions were both set to land in stores at the same time. But a few weeks later, Apple said the white iPhone wouldn't ship until the "second half of July." A month later, the Cupertino, Calif., company pushed the white iPhone's expected arrival to "later this year." And now we're looking at next spring. (Good thing Apple didn't say "the spring," or we'd have to ask "spring of what year?") At this exponential rate, the next delay will punt the white iPhone clear into 2013. So what's the story? Apple won't explain the delays, so we can only speculate--which is more fun anyway. Is "white iPhone" really the code name for "Verizon iPhone"? Is this thing made from powdered unicorn blood, yeti fur or the tears of a dogcow? (If you're actually annoyed or upset by these delays, please try to get on with your life. Here's another tip: Lucy won't let you kick that football.) Another nonexistent phone is in the news today--the PlayStation Phone Sony may or may not be working on. Engadget published pictures of this gaming-oriented smartphone yesterday, showing a slide-out device that looks a great deal like Sony's PSP Go. Writer Joshua Topolsky reported that it will run version 3.0 of Google's Android software and include one of the fastest processors seen in an Android phone yet. (An older post by the AOL-owned site has more details.) I can believe this exists. The non-denial denial by a Sony spokesman quoted by the Gamasutra site this morning--saying Engadget's photo was fake but not commenting on the substance of its reporting--is exceptionally weak. And other sources have seen this coming; last June, the Nikkei business newspaper reported that Sony was working on such a thing. That doesn't mean a PlayStation Phone or a PSP Phone will go anywhere in the market. Unless Sony has an exceptional software emulator or compatibility layer up its sleeve, this hybrid won't run existing titles without a rewrite. Its earlier attempts at smartphones, while technically impressive at times, have gone nowhere in the market. So have earlier attempts at building gaming-first phones, such as Nokia's epically failed N-Gage. The only smartphone to take off as a mass-market gaming platform is the iPhone itself--and that started life as a general-purpose device, not a miniaturized gaming console. (Good thing Apple didn't try to ship it in white first.) I welcome your speculation about the continued nonexistence of the white iPhone, and/or the prospects of the PlayStation phone, in the comments. Bonus points for anybody who can weave the two stories together into one theory!
