Worst fears confirmed
I was surprised while reading Friday morning's Inbox to find people expressing disappointment in a Metroid game that they hadn't yet played and affirming your review of it as offering the consensus opinion.  The reality is that your 5/10 mark is well below the game's Metacritic ranking, with some very well-regarded reviewers (e.g. Edge and gamesTM) being positively glowing about it (giving it an 8 and a 9 respectively).  This is by no means a criticism of your review, which I'm sure was as honest as any other - I'm just a bit confused by people taking your word as gospel and ignoring the numerous very positive reviews the game has received.

PS: I've not played the game yet either and may find myself sharing your disappointment!

GC: We don't think anyone was taking it as gospel or a consensus opinion. The principal concerns of Metroid: Other M (the controls and cut scenes/story) have been known about and fretted over for some time, so criticism of them wouldn't have come as a surprise to many.

It all adds up
In response to PazJohnMitch: I don't mean to suggest that value for money was the most important factor in whether a game was a good purchase. Whether one enjoys a game is for me the primary factor, good value for money is a bonus.
My model is only meant as a rough guideline, and even then you are perfectly at liberty to disagree with it. I also probably wouldn't compare the raw numbers once I get down to 'good value' (where good value differs between individuals). Once I feel two games have reached that 'good value' threshold I wouldn't call one especially better than the other based on value alone.
I've not played any of the first few games you mention (no PlayStation 3 in my house, and I've never cared for Final Fantasy) but from how you've written about them, I definitely wouldn't argue with you saying that Uncharted was better value (for you, it's all opinion after all) than Final Fantasy XIII.

While I agree that the pounds per hour idea is slightly flawed, games certainly present value for money. A new DVD at around £15 would provide about two or three hours, and I've just spent £60 on a ticket to watch football for 90 minutes. I also have a bit of a hobby tinkering with cars which has cost more than I can imagine. 100 hours on Fallout 3 for £20 is a bargain.

Hungry for success
Let's compare playing online with food! Doing a single player game is like sitting down in a posh restaurant and savouring each mouthful at your own pace and enjoying the surroundings. Whereas being online is like being on stage in a pie eating competition, jamming as much as you can into your system and being as disgusting as possible in order to 'win'. I'm never that hungry for it!

The third way
I meant to write in for the Hot Topic, but the best use of online gaming is when they combine split-screen and online. This means you get the best of both worlds. Warhawk has provided more online play for me than any other game because my brother and I could team up against other people but still compete to get the most kills. Very few games provide this option, more's the pity.

Oddly happy
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath will be available to download from PlayStation Store next Easter, plus it'll support Move and have additional content. That has put one heck of a grin on my face. Please Inbox magic, more quality shooters with Move support! A patch for Uncharted 2 would be nice too.

Virtual reality
When I play games that involve jumping or falling from a height, such as Assassin's Creed, I experience an actual physical sensation of falling from that height myself. Do any other GCers feel this or am I just weird?

Do the Wii Guitar Hero controllers work on any of the Rock Band games, including the new one?
David Prescott

GC: That's supposed to be the case, but if you specify a specific combination we'll see if we or a reader can confirm it.

RE: VHS console. Action Max according to Wikipedia.

Any chance you state the other platforms games are available on when you review games? Don't think you do at present?
Chris Brindle

GC: We always state the other platforms at the bottom of the review, but there have been a lot of exclusives lately so it may have looked like we weren't.

Wow, I've been playing Doom for years and I've only just realised there's a map button. Facepalm.

Reader feature
With Duke Nukem making one of the most unlikely comebacks gaming has ever seen we want to know what other retro characters you'd like to habe perform the same trick.

What game character would you like to see return and what kind of game do you want them to be in? How attached do you really get to specific characters and would it really make any difference if they were replaced, as long as the game itself is good?

What makes a memorable character, other than the game they're in - is it their visual design, voiceover, back story or just a combination? Also, what characters would you be happy to see retire or at least go on an extended holiday?
