“PS3 Update 3.21. Loss of “Other Operating” Support - Tech Jackal” |
| PS3 Update 3.21. Loss of “Other Operating” Support - Tech Jackal Posted: 01 Apr 2010 08:04 AM PDT Owners of Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console will soon lose the ability to run additional operating systems on it. A small but enthusiastic user community have long used the PS3's support of other operating systems such as Linux, the PS3's firmware is to be updated to remove the ability in the near future. Gamers have taken advantage of the ability to hack a PS3 to run operating systems such as Linux to run an almost limitless variety of applications. From media center suites to emulators of old gaming systems, Linux offered gamers the ability to utilize their PS3 rather than need a dedicated media center PC. PS3 owners who update their system to the newest version of the firmware will no longer be able to use the "other operating systems" function. Those who decide to not upgrade the firmware to continue using these features will be unable to connect to the PlayStation network for online gaming, and will also be unable to play games which require the newest version of the firmware. Sony is making the change due to security reasons, and show no sign of backing down on the change. There is word from the fan community that there is a "hack" in progress to make the newest version of firmware continue to offer other OS support. Until then PS3 owners will have to choose between their other operating system support and the ability to log on to the PlayStation network, and eventually the ability to play new releases.

After the update my controllers will not sync. Did the update also prevent the use of "controllers"? LOL!
Sooo…. do those of us that paid for this feature get a refund?
my controllers do not work now.
After restarting the system, it gave me an error. Now the controllers work.
So did any of you who updated have a Linux OS installed already? If so, after the update did you get your partioned space back? What I don't understand about this update, is it going to do that? I have a feeling no. So I'm guessing to get your space back you have to reformat your drive and then update.
F'n Sony and F'n GeoHotz
hahaha im glad, sorry to all the hackers but its about time you guys got stopped!
@ Redbull. Who are all the hackers? It was pretty handy having linux running on the ps3 in your living room. This wasn't been used to play cracked copies of games or anything so whats your point? Is it that it could be used in the future to hack the system?
Also I agree with BCut -there needs to be information about the partitions.
Your controllers DO work, you just have to use the arrow pad rather than the analog sticks to scroll through the agreement and then press OK
I really think this is scandalous. I upgraded my HD in my PS3 and spent ages getting Linux OS sorted when I got my PS3 years ago. I'm a techy, a geek…I don't really use it but I like to know that feature is there. It was there when I bought the machine, it was something at the time that made me prefer the PS3 to the 360. The very idea to take something away from the consumer who legitimately use the product in the way it was sold seems illegal to me, a misuse of power. This very act has, for the first time, made me very conscientious of where the worries of an always-online household where the powers that be can turn off / on features of products to their choosing.
I've always understood updates, and fixes, but never have I seen complete disabling of a feature of a product as years down the line they think a very small number could misuse it.
So is the way it will happen? Just remove everything rather than fix it? Punish legit users? I will be enquiring about this from a legal and personal viewpoint. As a consumer, how can the product be allowed to change after purchase?
Imagine buying a pair of jeans, but few months down the line, the stitching has to be a different colour because it doesn't reflect the new image of the company so it has to be changed…would you have still bought those jeans? Silly analogy, but same purpose..the product is changing against your will whilst in your possession. How can that be right?
No one as far as I've seen has even mentioned the fact that they had some control over our ps3 with the last failure of the PSN. How can a failure on the network cause our PS3's to stop playing games altogether? I understand the network thing but trophies or not it should not cause us to not be able to play offline games. Now this new update! If there was a hack maybe someone would've exploited it already by now since its been years. SCAM! SCAM! SCAM!
Thats true! As much as we hear about Microsoft's monopoly, they have never shut down my PC because of some issue on the network. Sony has too much control over our expensive purchase!

may as well just take off everything else from us. robbing b**'s turning mine into a grill as we speak
@sky
See, the thing is that sony isn't stopping you from putting an other os on your playstation. They're giving you the complete option, you'll just loose your access to the playstation network. Which, legally, isn't included as a part of purchase of the product. Technically, in the terms of use, sony could begin charging for access to PSN, or remove it completely, or ban JUST YOU from accessing it, if they so wished too.
In general, I think sony did the right thing by warning customers and giving them the freedom of choosing. In reality most other companies would simply just remove the option, without warning or option to leave things the way they are.
Why doesn't any of this suprise me, i've been a gamer since i can remember and have just this week cancelled (after 6 yrs)my xbox live account because of the way console developers and game companies seem to be neglecting the very people who keep them in work. I was hoping that SONY was gonna treat me with a little more respect than MICROSHAFT but again i have been kicked in the teeth, still we live in hope. I have never condoned piracy or hacking but im beginning to hope that someone out there will bring back the fight for us gamers. Long live the revolution…..lol
@kevin gryp. See that's where your wrong Kevin. The April fools joke is that there is no option. It's either remove the other os feature or not be able to enjoy your ps3 as originally purchased. no one would buy a ps3 without online support hence it is included in your original purchase. No one would buy COD 4 without online mode. Meaning that all games now have some sort of online feature. I feel the need for a refund of not only my system but also my games that sony is crippling by not allowing me to use online features for such as Street Fighter 4. fuck you sony
There are a ton of legitimate uses for the OtherOS functions, including the university server-farms, etc. But I think that the biggest point is that we PAID for it when we bought it…
It's not like the crack is going to give us features we didn't pay for: wireless? in there. browser? in there. online play for free? in there. What are they so scared about?
@ Redbull
there is no 'hack' involved here. sony gave the option and the steps to install other operating systems on ps3's. hahaha they're just taking functionality away from their own products, and from the loyal playstation fans who spent the outrageous amounts of money on them. personally i think they're doing this for money. just think about it, around christmas you'll probably see a ps3 pc pack that comes with a disk giving the other os option back and a keyboard and mouse, because we all know sony doesnt make enough money already
haha… now "it only does 'almost' everything"
so much for that ad campaign!
this is so F'd up!!!!!!! man!!, im getting more and more fed up with how these companies are getting away with this kind of stuff!!! how is this even legal?!?! as far as some won in these comments saying they COULD technicly take away the free PSN, when that happens ,that will be my last straw….ill throw my ps3 over a bridge into the river, video tape it , and send it to sony and tell them this is what i think of there company!!! some ppl just say stuff like that, but trust me, itll be alright with me to do it seeing that ive owned it since it first came out,ive got my moneys worth out of it, and trust me ,ill NEVER buy another sony product agian…so they can forget about trying to sell me some PS4!!!-i dont care what kind of new features it has, it could take you to the moon for all i care,cause therell always be that chance that they might take it away later on!!!!
@Kevin Gryp - the thing is… Sony didn't warn us. What about those of us who just selected the system update icon because a game told us about an update, but nowhere were any details of the update provided? I'm lucky I googled this on my phone while downloading the update. I promptly pressed circle to cancel while I mull this over. Time to visit the G.A.P. Forum…
Okay, are we sure this isn't an April Fool's joke?
@aroberts
oh please god no. if they F-ing sell me the ability to put another OS on this thing after they took it away, i would definitly be done with sony forever.
@tim
this is why i also own a Wii. nintendo never dissapoints.

Thanks for the info BlueMiles! Sony should be sued because when you purchase the PS3, you are led to believe you are entitled to the free PSN network. To advertise its functionality and then pull out on the basis of a new update and an option to choose whether or not to update is plain lazy support for the original buyers who allowed the PS3 to take off in popularity in the first place. That simply means theyre telling us the consumer/their boss (since we pay them and keep them having their jobs) to go to hell! Well I know who's really going to hell!
