While the Android operating system started out as a platform oriented at tech-savvy people and businesses, it has cardinally switched focus once it was acquired by Google and later by the OHA (Open Handset Alliance, the current owners) towards a more user-friendly interface and general approach.
New handsets such as the Nexus One, Motorola Droid and Devour are as user-friendly as the iPhone, while still making it possible for advanced users to customize it to their heart's liking.
The apps marketplace has finally started to grow at an acceptable rate, and more importantly, with mainstream oriented applications that the majority of people would want to buy.
Entertainment is such a category. The first versions of Android had hardly any media and game playing capabilities, even though the hardware allowed it. The music player was lacking advanced features, yet was hard to use, and the range of video formats one could play was limited to avi and mp4. Everything changed in the last year and now we have a lot of existing and upcoming apps designed to entertain the user. Below is a list of the best entertainment apps for Android.
Colorix. You never get tired of playing this beautiful game. It's like Tetris; only instead of falling blocks you get rolling orbs. Very beautiful rolling orbs
. The game is very well made and the graphics are so realistic it seems that the orbs will roll out of the screen into the real world. One should try it out first had to truly appreciate just how good this game is. It can keep you entertained for hours at end.
Pandora Radio. One of the best free streaming apps for Android. Despite it's name, Pandora doesn't stream only radio. You can create your own "station" which would play your favorite artist, just like a playlist of mp3 files. You have to sign up for a free Pandora account first and create the "radio station", then configure the Android app to stream it. Sadly, it currently works only for US residents, no customers from other countries are allowed.
Armageddon Squadron. Another great game for Android. This time it's a 3D arcade flight simulator and shooter. You take control of a World War 2 era fighter with a lot of weapons in your arsenal and are sent on mission from bombing battleships and land bases to searching for submarines and dogfighting other air fighters. The graphics and sound are great, and the whole experience is just what you'd get on a Playstation Portable, only more portable
.
Meridian Player. One of the best advanced media players, Meridian plays both video and audio and has a wide range of features and options. You can view mp3 ID tags, search and download lyrics for your favorite songs and subtitles for movies, create playlists of local music and movie files, and much more. Probably the best thing is that it's completely free!
NESoid, Gensoid, SNESoid and others. Whether you enjoyed playing console games when you were young or not, these classic console (Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and others) emulators will surely make for some great time wasting tools
. Now you can play Earth Worm Jim, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario while you wait in line at a store or are just bored.
Things are just getting started for Android. New versions of the above software will have more, better features and new apps that will appear will possibly be even better. All you have to do is wait a few months and check the marketplace periodically.
