PlayStation Phone hands-on shows emulated PS1, GBA games - Destructoid

By now, it's safe to call the long-rumored PlayStation Phone one of the worst-kept secrets in the history of the tech/gaming world. Engadget posted photos of the Android-powered device three months ago, and since then, we've seen video of the phone to further confirm its existence. It's reportedly called the "Xperia Play," and Engadget has now published a comprehensive preview based on a prototype that has been "floating around in China."

The Xperia Play is equipped with a 4-inch, 854×480-pixel LCD screen, and under the hood, it contains a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. Pushing the screen upwards from a horizontal position reveals the PlayStation D-pad and face buttons; Start, Select, and Menu buttons; and that strange oval touchpad (without any native games to try, Engadget was unable to test the functionality of the pad). According to Engadget, the device is "less well balanced than the bottom-heavy" PSPgo, although its build is reportedly of higher quality than Sony's UMD-free handheld.

Engadget also noticed the same PlayStation Pocket app that we've seen before; it looks like a library to hold your digital games. As for actually playing games on the prototype, they downloaded a PlayStation emulator and a Game Boy Advance emulator, and as you can see in the video above, they loaded up four games -- Ridge Racer Revolution (PS1), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (PS1), Gundam Battle Assault 2 (PS1), and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (GBA) -- all of which ran pretty well. Real buttons instead of virtual touch-screen "buttons" sure are nice for gaming, aren't they?

Sony is expected to officially unveil the Xperia Play next month. Are you interested yet? If you are, check out the full in-depth preview over at Engadget.

Altered Beast Review: An Unaltered Nostalgic Beat 'Em Up - TheAPPera.com

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 04:01 PM PST

I have fond memories of the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis for the Americans) as it was my first games console as a child. This must be the reason why I can't resist hitting they buy button when I see a new title from Sega.

Altered Beast

Originally released in 1988 as an arcade game before being converted to numerous consoles including the Mega Drive/Genesis, PC, Atari and more recently xBox 360 and Playstation 3… Oh and the iPhone of course.

Presentation

Anyone who's played any of the previous Sega ports will instantly see that the same emulator has been used here which means that the menus look, well, terrible really. But menus aren't what this is about, this is about nostalgia. The in-game graphics haven't really been touched and so look exactly as it did when released, great for nostalgia but this is now over 20 years old and sadly, feels it too.

Controls

Making use of the same emulator means making use of the same control system. The v-pad and 'a', 'b' and 'c' button arrangement will now be familiar to all  who've played any of the various ports being put out by Sega. Sadly, they still haven't managed to get it quite right and there's something unsatisfying about playing a button bashing beat 'em up when you have no physical buttons to bash.

Gameplay

One place where being left untouched is a good thing. Anyone who played the original will feel right at home. For those not familiar with the original, the game is a side scrolling beat 'em up. You play a warrior resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter from an evil demon.

As you progress through the game you can collect spirit balls that provide bigger and better "beasts" which will eventually culminate in the werewolf style creature in the games icon. As you'd expect the port contains everything from the original and is a like-for-like replication of the original Mega Drive/Genesis version.

Suggestions

Sega seem intent on continuing to push games out using the same emulator. Whilst I certainly get a certain warm feeling from playing games from my childhood I wonder if Sega would be better releasing the Emulator itself with downloadable content for different titles.

Conclusion

This is one of the all time classic Mega Drive/Genesis games, but time has not been kind to this style of beat 'em up. If you were a fan of the original then you'll enjoy this as well but it's not something to recommend to just anybody.
